The town of Mullaitivu is located in the Mullaitivu district of Northern province of Sri Lanka. The city is liner in shape with the sea and forest lands in the east; paddy and lagoon in the west.

Mullaitivu district covers land area of 25169 sqkm. Mullaitivu has coastal belt of 70 km. It has four lagoons – Kokkilai, Nayaru, Nonthikadal and Mathalan.

Mullaitivu is a fishing and agricultural town. It is rich with different ecosystems, such as forest land, shrub land, coconut plantation, agricultural land and water bodies.

Mullaitivu was one of the battle grounds in the civil war, which resulted in destruction of property and livelihood. The area is rising up from the ashes.

The city of Mullaitivu is rich in bio diversity with wetlands, paddy lands, coconnut and palmyrah plantation as well as forest cover.
